How does it work?
Lighting your fire:
Add dry wood, preferably seasoned or kiln dried split logs, into the base of the fire pit and light using a natural fire lighter.
Fire needs oxygen to burn effectively and the Woodee provides this in abundance. The clever design draws in oxygen from every angle through oak leaf shaped air vents to the heart of the fire. This enables it to get hot quickly and ignites the smoke. You will therefore find it much cleaner, have less smoke and be more efficient than a bowl, dish or solid shaped fire pit. It will also be less affected by gusts of wind than other fire pits as the tall straight sides protects the flame.
As well as drawing air in through the air vents, the heat also radiates out through them. This means you will benefit from the heat around your lower leg, keeping your whole body warm, rather than all the heat rising from the top and escaping into the atmosphere.
Cooking on your Lid/Cooking Tray:
To cook on your fire pit, you are aiming for heat and not roaring flames. Embers or low flames are best if using wood, or grey or silver colouration if using charcoal. Generally, your fire will need to burn for around 40-45 mins before you start cooking which will give it time to build up a body of heat to cook upon. When the fire is at the right temperature, add your cooking tray, lip side up onto the rim of the fire pit. Brush all over with cooking oil. We prefer to use rape seed oil as it has a high flash point, but you can also use other cooking oils. To check to see if the fire is hot we add a small amount of oil in the centre of the cooking tray and then a knob of butter to this. How quickly the butter melts is a good indication of how hot the tray is. There are literally hundreds of dishes you can cook in this way, check out our blog for ideas. Some of our favourites are paella, full English breakfast, curry, stir fry, and pancakes!
Is it easy to clean?
Yes. Once the fire is cold use a plastic dustpan to scoop the ash out of the base of the fire pit. Being made of stainless steel means that you can wash and scrub this with hot soapy water and it won't affect the metal - you could even power wash it if you wanted to give it a good clean. To clean the Lid use hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush or wire brush. You can scrub the topside of the lid which will be black with soot after it has been in contact with the fire. It will not go back to the shiny silver colour, but will take on a honey or bronze colour as the metal tempers under the heat. However just wipe the underside of the lid but do not scrub it too much as you want to season it so it becomes more non-stick.
Additionally, unlike mild steel it will not leave any rust marks on your patio.
In the base we cut out another oak leaf shaped drainage hole. This allows rain water to pass through ensuring you are not left with a puddle of water in your fire pit during inclement weather.
Use the Woodee simply for warmth, alternatively with this set you can cook on it or to use as a stunning garden table.
